Baby Potty Training – Is it Worth the Effort?
Potty training a child can be a very frustrating time for both the parent and the child. Most often training starts around the age of 2, but the time in which the child is completely done with diapers can vary dramatically between children. A new approach that many parents are trying is called baby potting training, or infant potty training. This article will look at the pros and cons of using this technique and whether or not it will be worth the effort in the end.
Baby potting training often commences at a very early age, usually between birth and 4 months. This is to avoid having to unlearn their diaper behavior, which could potentially draw out the potty training process. Most children who use this method have graduated by 18 months and know when they have to use the potty and get there successfully. During this time, the parent is having to anticipate their babies needs and try to get them to a toilet in time.
Many who use this method say it isn’t as bad as it seems and can be very beneficial to the baby as they have less incidents of diaper rash, avoid diaper dependency, and potty train sooner than other children. This is debatable as some children who are “ready” to potty train can be ready to do so around or before the age of 2 anyway. What’s not debatable is the benefit to a parents pocket book and the many landfills around the world that have less diapers in them thanks to this method.
But is this method worth the effort? That all depends on your lifestyle and what you are willing to do. It takes a lot of time and dedication to use this form of potty training and while it has some pros, the cons often outweigh anything else as most people just don’t have the time to devote to it. Many parents are working and can’t possibly be there enough for their child to do this method, and even if they were most wouldn’t want to deal with all of the potential accidents.
There is also the mentality that babies can’t possible control themselves in this way. Mark L. Wolraich, a pediatrician and professor at the University of Oklahoma, states “In most cases, children can’t go deliberately – or even indicate a need to go – much earlier than 18 months. The age does vary greatly, though, depending on the child.”
The most recent thoughts on the subject believe that waiting until your child is ready will make the experience go faster and be a more positive experience for all. Still, giving baby potty training a try, even if you only try it off and on, can benefit your child simply because they will get to have some freedom away from the diaper. There is no law that states you have to go no diapers all of the time in order to try this diaper free method. Deciding if it is worth the effort is really a personal preference and will be something you have to decide for yourself.
